Description
Join us for this coffee at one of our charming local historic mansions.
Located within the Cheney Brothers National Historic Landmark District, Wedgeway is the original home of Austin and Ruth Cheney and is included in the National Historic Registry. Built in 1911 with a major addition in 1921, the grand home is situated at the western edge of a nine-acre parcel of town owned land known as the “Great Lawn” and is the newest of the Cheney Mansions. Austin and Ruth Cheney named the property “Wedgeway” do to the unusual shape of the lot. The home remained in the family for many years with Mrs. Cheney living here into her early 90’s. Over the following decades the mansion changed hands a number of times, and it began to show its age. The home was purchased by Robert and Susan Shanbaum in 2001, and the couple spent the next 15 years lovingly restoring and updating the mansion. The home was sold to a private company in 2016 which began converting it into “dorm” style rooms for international students studying at local area schools. Significant changes were made during this conversion process and a portion of original details were damaged or removed. We purchased the building with the goal of changing it back into a single-family home and running it as a bed and breakfast. After a year of renovations (most of which we did ourselves) we were able to open as a B & B and begin to share the mansion's beauty and history with our guests.
